A team of veterinarians and Madhya Pradesh Forest Department officials finally succeeded in rescuing two critically injured tiger cubs hit by a train, after a long rescue operation on Tuesday.

The team rescued the injured cubs from near the Joshipur village in the Budhni Tehsil of Sehore district.

The cubs were brought by a train to Bhimbetka and from there, they were shifted to a vehicle, which took them by road to the Van Vihar National Park and Rescue Centre at Bhopal, about 45 km away, for further treatment.

According to Sehore District Forest Officer (DFO) Mangal Singh Dawar, the deceased cub was around 8 months old. Its body was recovered from the tracks and sent for postmortem.

The injured cubs sustained serious injuries to their backbones, forest officials suspected, as the cubs could not walk and kept lying at one spot only near the railway tracks.

However, the forest department rescue team faced a tough time as the mother tigress did not move away from her seriously injured cubs and kept on licking their wounds.

The tigress was also agitated and roared repeatedly, preventing the rescue team from providing immediate treatment to the injured cubs.

The forest team was making continuous efforts since Monday to rescue the two injured cubs so that necessary treatment could be provided to save their lives.
